Murry  > The Good Old Days > The Grigsbys > The Good Old Days
This gallery traces the Grigsby family history from 1872 through family photos and information gathered together by William (Bill) Redman Grigsby for his Grandsons, Ryan and Jack. Photographs were cleaned up by Murry Grigsby, Bill's brother. Most of the photos came from Mom and Dad as did life itself. Other photographs were generously contributed by Phyllis and Martin Jones, Janie Root Eddy, Kathleen Staten Thompson, Donald Grigsby, Bud Miers, Terry Miers, Holly Kottenstette Fritz, Jim Miers, Norman Spring, Connie Hester, Lynnette Herring Fleming, Verna Mae Bechtel Staten, Rebecca Rombach Copple, Mrs. Emerson Carey II and Kiki Tomson. We hope you enjoy seeing and reading a small bit of the Grigsby history.

Murry > This picture shows John Maxwell Hester who was born in 1863. John is one of the younger brothers of our great grandmother, Eva Hester Graves. John Maxwell Hester is the great grandfather of Connie Hester who generously provided this image.
Murry > This photo shows the other 5 younger brothers of Eva Hester Graves. — Thomas (born abt. 1868), Edwin (born abt. 1861), Frederick (born abt. 1873), David (born abt. 1859) and Charles (born abt. 1870). The photo was provided by Connie Hester (our 3rd cousin) who is the great grand-daughter of John Maxwell Hester, Eva's other brother.
Murry > 1895 William Redman Grigsby: Will at about 24 having his picture made (in Garnett, Kansas about five miles south of Wiiliamsburg) just before he married Lida Alma Graves on December 31, 1895 in Williamsburg, Kansas.
Murry > 1896 Lida Alma Graves Grigsby: This photo of our Grandmother Grigsby was taken in the Opera House Building in Ottawa, Kansas. Bill thinks that is a wedding ring on her left hand so she had married William Redman (December 31, 1895). Lida was born in Streator, Illinois on March 24, 1878 so she would have been about 18 years old. William Redman Grigsby was born on June 21, 1871 near Leon, Iowa and that would have made him 24 when they married. Photo source is Lynnette Herring Fleming.
Murry > 1896 John A.P. and Amanda Hester: A.P. and Amanda Phibbs Hester were the parents of Eva Hester Graves born in Antioch, Ohio in 1857 and died in Williamsburg, Kansas in 1930 (who was the mother of Lida Alma Graves Grigsby, our grandmother born in Streator, Illinois in 1878). Amanda Phibbs was the daughter of Elizabeth Clemmons Phibbs who was born in 1790 and died in 1883.
Murry > 1897 Thelma, Amanda, Charles (front row), Eva and Lida (back row): This photograph was contributed by Phyllis Grigsby Jones who received it from her father, Charles Wayne Grigsby. The woman sitting in the middle of the front row is Amanda Phibbs Hester and she is sitting between Thelma Graves and Charles Wayne Grigsby who were both born in 1896. The women in the back row from left to right are Eva Hester Graves and Lida Alma Graves Grigsby. Lida Alma, born in 1878, and Thelma are sisters and the daughters of Eva. Charles is the first child of Lida Alma so Thelma is Charles' aunt.
Murry > This photo was made around Williamsburg, KS and it was taken about 1905 before Hildreth or Dad were born. The brothers in the picture are from left to right, Walter Donald Grigsby (b. 30 Nov 1900), Charles Wayne Grigsby (b. 20 Oct 1896) and William Theodore Grigsby (b. 12 Aug 1898). Another brother, George Selden Grigsby, was born June 16, 1902 and died April 9, 1903 and Hildreth was born May 31, 1907. Bill's conclusion is that this picutre was taken after George Selden died but before Hildreth was born. Maybe after George Selden (named for Lida Grigsby's father, George Selden Graves) died, Will and Lida wanted to have a photograph of their sons.
Murry > This image shows the Robert Edward Staten family in about 1906. On the back of the photo the participants are listed as: Back Row from left to right: Frankie, Ray, Chalmer Murry (for whom brother Murry was named), Mae (also known as "big" Mae as opposed to "little" Mae, our mother), and Effie. Front row from left to right: Robert Edward Staten (1862 to 1952), Tilda, Josephine and Lurena Elizabeth Taylor Staten (1862 to 1931). The photograph was probably made somewhere in Missouri. Chalmer was born in 1894 and died in 1957 and I'm estimating that he is about 12 years old in the photo that makes it about 1906.
Mom is buried in the Downing, Missouri cemetery on the same plot with Robert Edward and Lurena (her favorite grandmother) Taylor Staten.
Murry > This photo came from dad and he labeled the people in the photo with ink on the face of the image!! Bill guessed that it was taken around Christmas 1915 because Hildreth is holding what looks like two new "dollies" and there are no leaves on the trees. Aunt Thelma was married to Frank Herring and she was about 5 months pregnant with daughter Lynette who was born in April 1916. The people in the photograph according to dad's labels are from left to right: Theodore Grigsby, "Dad" (William Redman Grigsby), "Mom" (Lida Alma), dad's sister Hildreth, a question mark above the woman next to Lida Alma indicating dad didn't remember who that was, grandma Eva Hester Graves, Aunt Thelma (Graves Herring -- Lida's younger sister), "Bud" (James Maurice Grigsby about 5), grandpa George Selden Graves, Walter Grigsby, Charles Grigsby (whom dad labeled as Theodore his first try) and "Dog." Bill also believes the location was grandpa and grandma Graves' farm in Ohio Township of Franklin County Kansas where they lived in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. Ohio Township is adjacent to and east of Williamsburg Township.
